AROMATHERAPY, FOR NATURAL HEALTH AND WELL-BEING

Have you ever heard of aromatherapy? Essential oils? Don't know exactly what it is? Here are some basics you need to know about this “soft” medicine that has been very popular in recent years.

Aromatherapy is a therapeutic approach that uses aromatic extracts from plants (essences or essential oils) to naturally heal the human body on three levels: physical, nervous, and emotional. Essential oils have been known and used for therapeutic purposes since the dawn of time by ancient civilizations. They are very concentrated in powerful active ingredients which give them strong biological activity.

How to choose your essential oils?
But given the diversity of all these essential oils, it is not easy to find your way around. Which oils to use, when, how? The essential oils that you select to treat yourself must be guaranteed “ 100% pure and natural” indicating that the essential oil is not modified or diluted, rectified or reconstituted. You should also favor essential oils from organic crops. They guarantee the absence of any pesticide residue or other plant treatments. Make sure that the batch number is indicated on the packaging to ensure the traceability of the product, the expiry date after opening, the manufacturer's contact details and the capacity. Essential oils can be used orally, cutaneously or by diffusion but they each have recommendations depending on the molecules they contain. Some will therefore be used orally rather than by diffusion, while others will only be used cutaneously. Depending on the benefits you are looking for, you will select the appropriate essential oil…for example, sweet orange and lavender essential oil to soothe and relax; cineole ravintsara oil for viral infections; peppermint oil against headaches or to tone the body….
Precautions to take
The active ingredients of essential oils give them strong biological activity but also a certain toxicity. This toxicity is due to the physicochemical characteristics of aromatic molecules: small size, liposolubility as well as persistence in fatty tissues (such as the nervous system). There are therefore certain precautions to take when using essential oils, whether orally, on the skin or by diffusion. If you have any doubts or questions about the use of essential oils, do not hesitate to consult an aromatherapist or contact the manufacturer.
Generally speaking, the diffusion and inhalation of essential oils is not recommended for people with asthma, epilepsy as well as young children and the elderly. Moreover, essential oils and medicinal treatments should not be combined without medical advice. Oils rich in phenols (cloves, chili leaves) can be irritating, particularly to the respiratory tract, and are not recommended for diffusion or inhalation. It is possible to use them in diffusion in small quantities, mixed with other less aggressive essential oils (citrus fruits, true lavender for example). Essential oils rich in ketones (camphor, wormwood, thuja) should not be diffused, particularly in the presence of children because they present high neurological toxicity. For application to the skin or mucous membranes, essential oils must be diluted in a vegetable oil and never used pure. You must wash your hands thoroughly after handling them. Essential oils should not be applied to the eyes, around the eyes, or in the ears. Furocoumarins present in the essential oils of citrus peels confer photosensitization after exposure to the sun. It is therefore recommended not to expose yourself to the sun for 6 hours following the skin application of these oils.

Pregnant women and babies
Generally speaking, the use of essential oils is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women. Unless medical advice is given, it is not recommended to use essential oils in babies and children under 3 years old. For children over 3 years old, use should be done following the recommendations of your therapist.
